7 out of Top 10 Emerging Jobs Are in Tech

LinkedIn analyzed their data to reveal the fastest-growing jobs of 2017. No surprise - tech jobs dominated, making up 70% of the list. Machine Learning Engineer topped the list of the top emerging jobs in the U.S. with almost 10 times more LinkedIn users listing it as their profession now than five years ago.

"Data scientist roles have grown over 650 percent since 2012, but currently 35,000 people in the US have data science skills, while hundreds of companies are hiring for those roles - even those you may not expect in sectors like retail and finance - supply of candidates for these roles cannot keep up with demand."

The top 10 emerging positions are:

  1. Machine Learning Engineer (9.8X growth)
  2. Data Scientist (6.5X)
  3. Sales Development Representative (5.7X)
  4. Customer Success Manager (5.6X)
  5. Big Data Developer (5.5X)
  6. Full Stack Engineer (5.5X)
  7. Unity Developer (5.1X)
  8. Director of Data Science (4.9X)
  9. Brand Partner (4.5X)
  10. Full Stack Developer (4.5X)

One report estimates that 65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately hold jobs that don’t yet exist. The top two jobs on this year's list didn't exist a few years ago - so what has the career trajectory looked like for a Machine Learning Engineer and Data Scientist? In analyzing the career paths for many of the top emerging jobs, the common thread is software engineers:

The LinkedIn 2017 Year in Review report reveals that U.S. hiring was 10.4% higher in 2017 than in 2016. In November, hiring across the U.S. was 26.0% higher than in November 2016. When it comes to the tech industry, Technology - Hardware hiring is up 16.6% from November 2016 and Technology - Software hiring is up 14.9% from November 2016.
