Terrific 12+ months contract opportunity in Barrington, Illinois for a Microbiology Lab Technician. Will use microbiology lab techniques to analyze a variety of matrices including foods, beverages, packaging materials, water samples and environmental samples (e.g., air sampling agar plates and swabs) in a laboratory environment to assure product safety and quality, and to generate technical insights. Will also provide technical assistance to other Microbiology Dept. team members to enable the most efficient use of resources and time.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
  • Preparation of high-quality microbiological media and reagents.
  • Lab Quality Systems documentation support (paperwork or using software).
  • Laboratory support for shelf-life studies, microbial challenge studies, and related R&D Microbiology research projects.
  • Technical support for the preparation and analysis of R&D consumer test samples (beverages, foods, ingredients) and maintenance of the R&D Microbiology culture collection. This individual will also be expected to contribute to building an inclusive environment and positive work culture within the R&D Technical Center.
  • B.S. or B.A. degree in a core science field such Microbiology, Biology, Cell Biology, Food Science, etc.
  • 2+ years of paid work experience, of which at least 1 year must be in a business or university (paid-position) laboratory setting (references required).
  • Ability to work safely, effectively and harmoniously with others in a dynamic and changing R&D work environment.
  • Effective time management and ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects in a dynamic R&D community environment.
  • Strong customer service orientation and proven relational intelligence skills.
  • Good verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must understand the nature and safe handling of various chemicals/ reagents and BSL-2 bacterial pathogens (e.g., Salmonella spp., Listeria spp.) and have an appreciation of the normal hazards associated with laboratory work.
  • Capable of learning and applying various new and modified techniques of analysis and applied research.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experienced in using a personal computer and proficient in the use of common software to perform mathematical calculations and to create and edit graphs and tables.
  • Proactive in bringing new ideas to the team or the organization (innovating) to improve the work environment, the efficiency of lab work processes, and lab safety practices.
