Position: EA Associate Architect
Location: St. Paul, Minnesota
Term: 4 months

 Associate Architect is a key role in the Enterprise Architecture (EA) practice in the client's IT department.  This role contributes to the development of an architected IT function for digital competency, by creating architecture components for IT solutions and domains, in context of IT enterprise.  The Associate Architect applies MHFs EA practice methodology and framework to create architecture and deployment plans.  

The Associate Architect collaborates with other architects in the EA practice to enable the development a single, cohesive architecture and management plan for the IT enterprise, contributes to living architecture and repository for reference and use across the company, and contributes to mature the EA practice.  The Associate Architect also works closely with domain leaders, subject matter experts and other architects to develop architecture components and plan for solutions and participates in presentations to management to explain why it is in the organizations best interest to pursue it.  

The Associate Architect must possess excellent interpersonal skills because this role will often lead via influence across multiple IT functions to drive new thinking and practices.


  • Understand and diligently apply EA methodology, framework and process to contribute to the development of a single, cohesive architecture for the IT enterprise.
  • Collaborate with other architects in EA practice and provide input to help derive architecture priority from IT strategy.
  • Articulate EA priority, purpose and scope of work within a domain, and identify domain resources required to develop architecture.
  • Seek input from domain SMEs to identify direct dependencies within a domain that is required to develop the architecture and propose a work plan to EA.
  • Develop As-Is and To-Be views of domain architecture as an integral component of architecture for the IT enterprise, including – 
  • Target outcomes translated into business capabilities, IT services and technologies.
  • Work plan across all required IT teams to develop architecture.
  • Architecture vision, business, data, application and technology layers.
  • Deployment plan (12-18 months) for target architecture that fits within overall roadmap for architected IT.
  • Cybersecurity and IT standards that are incorporated into the architecture.
  • Workforce impact assessment and recommendation to achieve target state.  
  • EA peer-review and formal endorsement of solutions and designs.
  • Create architecture views, artifacts for architecture analysis and documentation, and management plan using the tools and templates prescribed by EA framework.
  • Contribute to EA review and analysis within the domain for architecture design in a manner that enables domain leader to make choices for technologies or services.
  • Translate vendor roadmaps for current technologies into LCM plans.
  • Upload architecture development plan and documentation into  online living architecture and EA repository to enable reference and use across the company.
  • Contribute to domain activities to promote awareness of EA, technology choices, knowledge and expertise within domain to achieve operations target KPIs. 
  • Effectively contribute to improvement efforts within EA to mature the practice, develop architecture expertise and promulgate EA thinking and use across IT.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served

Required Skills and Experience 
  • Education: Associate degree in computer science or combination of equivalent education and experience
  • 3-4 years of experience in an IT domain or sub-domain
  • 2-3 years of industry experience
  • 1-2 years of architecture experience
  • Demonstrated experience working in rapid-paced work environment and agile delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize research on broad industry trends, present different and leading discussion on pro/con around approach and choices of design, technology and operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to simplify complex technical subject matter and communicate the business and operations impact of choices to business and IT leaders. 

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Advanced degree in computer science or related field.
  • 3-4 years of experience in an IT domain or sub-domain
  • 3-4 years of industry experience
  • 2-3 years of architecture experience
  • License/Certification/Registration:Multiple architecture frameworks.
