Our client is seeking a Director of Portfolio Management for a direct hire opportunity located in Dallas, TX and Cedar Rapids, IA

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Portfolio Management is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring all projects and programs for a Company business unit are effectively planned, prioritized, and executed. This individual operates with a high level of influence and interaction with all levels of the organization, including senior and executive leadership. The Director of Portfolio Management is responsible for managing and directing the work of project managers to ensure successful execution of projects and programs. This role is a highly visible, critical enabler of technology implementations and business change across the organization.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Major responsibilities of the position are listed below. Effectively manage a portfolio of projects and programs

  • Engage with senior leaders and stakeholders across the organization to ensure all projects in the portfolio are appropriately evaluated, estimated, reviewed, and prioritized in adherence with the EPMO Project Intake Process.
  • Maintain a comprehensive roadmap of all projects in the portfolio, including overall timelines, major milestones, and status.
  • Ensure the oversight and coordination of dependencies between the projects and programs in the portfolio and proactively resolve or escalate conflicts as necessary.
  • Coordinate with leadership, Finance, Accounting, and stakeholders to manage funding for the portfolio, including ensuring project budgets and actual costs are accurately tracked and alignment on total annual funding and spend for the portfolio.

Oversee and ensure the successful execution of projects and programs

  • Ensure proper management of all projects in the portfolio over the full range of the project life cycle (initiation, planning, execution, closure).
  • Ensure adherence to EPMO and enterprise requirements, standards, policies, and practices for governance and execution.
  • Coordinate with project managers to ensure project budgets, schedules, resource capacity plans, and success metrics are accurately maintained for all projects.
  • Drive execution with strict management of accountability and timelines.
  • Ensure projects and programs are delivered on time and on budget to achieve the defined business objectives and value.
  • Provide healthy pressure to ensure deliverables are met, roadblocks are knocked down, and options for resolving issues are appropriately identified and considered.
  • Oversee vendor engagements for projects, including facilitation of contracting and procurement activities, awareness of contractual obligations, and holding vendors accountable for their deliverables, commitments, and adherence to Company standards, processes, and ways of working.
  • Report on benefits realization for projects in the portfolio.

Manage stakeholder relationships with EPMO

  • Act as EPMO primary contact to other departments for managing the portfolio of projects and programs.
  • Conduct regular meetings with senior leadership to maintain awareness and alignment on project progress, status, and major risks and issues.
  • Interface at all levels of the organization to drive outcomes and challenge perspectives when necessary.
  • Engage senior leaders and stakeholders as needed to resolve issues related to project performance, resources, and funding.

Lead a team of project and program managers

  • Provide direction, guidance, and mentoring for a team of project and program managers.
  • Set and manage performance expectations with the team.
  • Assign team members to projects and ensure the workload of the team is balanced.
  • Fully support team members in resolving issues and removing obstacles.
  • Drive team staffing, training, and professional development as needed to support all projects and to ensure the team has the skills and competencies required for success.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, information systems, computer science, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience managing large, complex, cross-functional projects involving the implementation of technology, preferably in the financial services or software industry.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously without compromising quality.
  • Strong technology experience and skills with a deep understanding of best practices.
  • Strong experience managing vendor engagements and 3rd party technology providers.
  • Deep experience engaging and influencing senior level executives.
  • Project management experience in an Agile environment (preferably Scrum).
  • Experience applying project management frameworks (e.g., PMBOK).
  • Active project management certification (e.g., PMP).
  • 2+ years of experience in team leadership and personnel management.

  • Constant mental, visual, and auditory attention. The flow of work requires focused, detailed attention and keying at a computer monitor.
  • The job is typically performed under comfortable working conditions; any disagreeable elements are generally absent during normal performance of the job.
  • Compliance with company attendance standards.
  • This job role participates in an active production support rotation, so on-call responsibilities would be one week in every three.
